About this Tour:

Our 8 days running tour is designed for runners of all levels who have only limited time for their running holiday. However, the tour will still provide you with a great insight into Ethiopian running culture and you will be visiting some places of outstanding beauty offering excellent training conditions.

Highlights:

  • 4 nights at Yaya Athletcs Village outside of the capital Addis Ababa with endless trails between 1’800 and 3’200 m above seal level, including vehicle supported runs in different areas around Addis Ababa as well as various visits to cultural and natural attractions nearby.
  • 1 night in Bekoji, the tiny town of runners that so far has produced produced seven Olympic medal-winning runner. Training run in the nearby stunning Arsi Mountains.
  • 2 nights at Haile Resort, Hawassa, the beautiful Southern lakeside town in the Great Rift Valley .

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa and Transfer to Yaya Athletics Village in Sululta

Upon arrival you will be met by an Africa Running Tours representative at Addis Ababa International Airport and be transferred to Yaya Athletics Village in Sululta, approx. 1 hour drive from the airport. Depending on your arrival time, we will have a light training session to help you acclimatize.

Day 2: Long jog and Addis Ababa City Tour

Morning: we will have a vehicle supported training run in a beautiful area located in the Southern outskirts of Addis Ababa at an altitude of approx. 1’800 m above sea level.

Afternoon: City Tour of Addis Ababa:

Depending on your interests we have various sight- seeing options:

  • National Museum which among other exhibits the 3.5-million-year-old bones of Lucy.
  • Institute of Ethiopian Studies, where you can see a variety of artifacts from all the different regions reflecting the history and culture of the country
  • Trinity Cathedral: this is the burial place of members of the imperial family and noted patriots; the cathedral is the most magnificent of its kind in the country, ornamented with carvings, mosaics and other artistic works.
  • The Mercato, the largest open-air market in Africa

Day 3: Yaya Athletics Village and Excursion to Debre Libanos

Morning: Training Session around Yaya Athletics Village

Afternoon: Excursion to Debre Libanos

We travel North crossing the plains of Sululta until reaching Debre Libanos (approx. 1.5 hrs.). Debre Libanos hosts one of Ethiopia’s most important monasteries with an interesting adjacent museum exhibiting numerous antique treasures of the Ethiopian-orthodox  church. We will take a pleasant walk to the so-called “Portuguese Bridge”, with great views over the canyon. Some historians are of the opinion that the bridge is from the 16th  century, when the Portuguese invaded Ethiopia for a short time, others think it was built by emperor Menelik’s uncle in the 19th  century. After crossing the bridge, we will have a view of a 60 m high waterfall. Moreover, we should encounter here the endemic Gelada Baboons and a variety of bird species (particularly raptors). In the late afternoon we will return back to Sululta

Day 4: Excursion to Menagesha Forest National Park 

Today we take an excursion to Menagesha Forest, the closest tract of significant indigenous forest to Addis Ababa, 20km west of the capital. Menagesha incorporates 25 square km of juniper, African redwood and yellow wood trees, as well as Mount Wechecha, an extinct volcano that rises to 3385m. The forest can be explored along a network of trails that fan out from the forestry headquarters. Frequently spotted wildlife includes the striking Colobus monkey, endemic Menelik’s bushbuck and bold Anubis baboon, and predators include leopard and serval cat. Menagesha is also a particularly important site for endemic forest birds. In the late afternoon, we will return to Sululta.

Day 5: Suluta – Zway (lunch) –  Hawassa (309 km)

Morning: After our final training session in Sululta and breakfast we will leave Yaya Village and drive southwards to Zway (approx. 3 hours). After lunch at Haile Resort in Zway, we will undertake a boat trip on lake Zway and explore the beautiful bird island. For nature lovers, lake Ziway offers a fantastic variety of aquatic and arboreal bird species on its islands, shoreline, and neighboring forests. With a little luck we will also spot hippos.

Afternoon: We will continue to Hawassa, the capital town of the Southern People’s nations nicknamed as “The town of endless Love”. Here you may recover in the luxurious 4-star Haile Resort and the sunsets over lake Hawassa are usually fantastic!

Day 6: Full Day in Hawassa 

Morning: In Hawassa, you will enjoy the great Haile Resort, where from gym, sauna, steam bath, swimming pool to beauty treatment nothing is missing. In the morning it’s definitely worth visiting the authentic fish market, where you can observe the traditional fish trade and try the delicious, freshly preparedcatch of the day.

Afternoon: we may either visit the natural hot springs in Wondo Genet said to have healing powers for many different diseases or visit the coffee farms of Aleta Wondo, where of the word most famous Sidama coffee is grown.

Day 7: Hawassa – Bekoji (152 km)

Morning: Today we continue our journey to Bekoji, the small town in Central Ethiopia that so far has produced seven Olympic medal-winning runners: Kenenisa Bekele and his younger brother Tariku Bekele, Derartu Tulu and her cousins Ejegayehu Dibaba and Tirunesh Dibaba, Fatuma Roba, and Tiki Gelana. Among them, Bekoji’s runners have won 16 total Olympic medals – 10 of them gold – and more than 30 world championships. For some perspective: The runners from this tiny town have hauled in more gold medals than India (population: 1.2 billion) has won in all Summer Olympic categories put together, and nearly twice as many as Indonesia (population: 247 million) has. Welcome to the town of runners!

Afternoon: We will enjoy a beautiful run on the plateau of the Arsi mountains at about 2’800m a. sea level.

Gheralta Mountains, Tigray

Day 8: Bekoji – Sodere – Addis Ababa ( 220 km)

Morning / Afternoon: After breakfast, we drive back to Addis Ababa (approx. 5 hrs.). On our way, we will stop in Sodere and enjoy the popular natural hotsprings. We will reach Addis Ababa in the in the afternoon (a day room until departure will be provided).

Evening:
In the evening, you will be invited for a traditional Ethiopian dinner and dance show at a renowned restaurant of Addis Ababa. Then you will be transferred to the airport for your departure or to your reserved hotel should you have opted to extend your stay in Ethiopia.
