If any country in the world can boast to have it all enclosed its boundaries (wildlife, history, culture, diverse sceneries, magnificent hills and mountains, deserts, coral reefs and most impotantly welcoming people), then it certainly is Kenya! On top of all that, few cultures are as inextricably linked to running as is the Kenyan culture. For many young Kenyans running is not just a sport or a hobby, but a way of life and a source of pride. They are inspired by their role models and their traditions, which value hard work, discipline and perseverance. So it only makes sense that runners around the world would be interested to come to Kenya and, hopefully, would learn a thing or two about running. In fact, by participating in a running camp in Kenya, you’re getting a look at a very specific segment of Kenyan culture and life.
Kenyan runners also have a strong sense of community and support, as they train together in groups and camps under the guidance of experienced coaches. When you train with the best, you will be among the best, literally. Running is also seen as a means of achieving economic success and social recognition, as many Kenyan runners come from poor backgrounds and face many challenges in their lives. Therefore, they are motivated to run faster and win more. The best runners, like Eilud Kipchoge, and many others who won international titles have changed their lives for the better, and became national heros. They inspired more young people to join them in the running sports, and become the next Eliud Kipchoge.
There is no simple answer to why so many Kenyans are such extraordinary distance runners. It is likely a combination of several factors, such as genetics, environment, culture and motivation. However, one thing is clear: they have a passion for running that transcends any physical or mental barriers. They run with joy, grace and determination, and they inspire millions of people around the world with their amazing feats.
