Trail Running and Safari in Uganda (12 days)

Tour Overview:

This 12-day running adventure in Kapchorwa and safari is designed for runners of all abilities who want to experience a running holida or training camps as well as explore some of Uganda’s wildlife. The tour will provide you with an excellent understanding of Ugandan culture while also taking you to places of outstanding beauty and excellent training conditions. You will follow in the footsteps of numerous long-distance World- and Olympic champions.

Day 1: Arrival at Entebbe Airport and transfer to your hotel

Upon arrival, you will be met by your driver at Entebbe International Airport and be transferred to Via Via Guest House, located a few minutes from the airport. Depending on your arrival time, we can start with some light running training later today to help you acclimate.

Day 2: Transfer from Entebbe to Athletes Village Kapchorwa

After breakfast, depart Via Via around 8.00am for an adventurous 8-hour road drive to Kapchorwa. We will have stopovers along the way to stretch and refresh in Jinja and Mbale. The landscape will change dramatically as we begin to ascend towards Kapchorwa. We will have a final stopover at the Sipifalls viewpoint before check-in at the Athletes Village and dinner afterwards. Later in the evening, we will have a Campfire and get-to-know our local team with your guides for the week.

Day 3: Training in Kapchorwa / Local Market Tour

In the morning, we will have our first training session at the Champions Loop. Along with an experienced coach, who will thereafter introduce you to running in Kapchorwa by sharing his long-term experience in running and coaching.Return to the lodge to relax before departing for a 3-hour Kapchorwa town tour in the afternoon. The town is primarily inhabited by Kalenjin, Pokot, and Sabin people, and you will enjoy nice breathtaking scenery and natural charming landscapes. On the tour, you will visit a local African market and look for homes and local businesses owned by some of Uganda’s champions as a sign of the impact of running in the home of Champions Kapchorwa. Head back to the Athletes Village for relaxation and Dinner

Day 4: Discovering the roots of Uganda’s running champions, Kwen

We will drive to Kwen which is about 40m from Kapchorwa. The local Mosopisiek tribe will greet you with warm smiles as you run through the vast area of green rolling hills and fertile fields. Unlike the western side of the mountain, this region is truly off the beaten track. After the training runs we will have a break for lunch at Joshua Cheptegei family home. Only a handful of adventurous tourists visit Kween each year, which makes it a unique environment to explore. After Lunch, we will have some time to relax before driving back to the Athletes Village.

Day 5: Explore Sipi Falls

After breakfast, we set off for the highlight of the Sipi Falls hike. The 3 waterfalls are located in different areas on Mt. Elgon. It is impossible to see them all at once, but we will  see them all in one day. The paths to these falls are are 7km to 8km as you walk. Hiking the Falls will take around 3 hours, depending on your fitness and pace. You will get some walking sticks to give you support going through the steep spots. When it rains the paths can get pretty slippery and muddy. We will have a lunch break before we continue to the last waterfall. At your own expense, you can participate in optional activities such as abseiling or a coffee tour. Hiking the Sipi falls with local guides who are knowledgeable about the area’s history and geography is definitely an unforgettable experience. Get back to the lodge early evening for relaxation

Day 6: Better your Miles and Visit to Cheptegai’s Foundation

6:30 am we run for 1 hour on dirt road before heading back to the for breakfast In the afternoon, we will visit the Cheptegei Foundation. The Joshua Cheptegei Development Foundation was founded with the goal of transforming communities into strong, united, and influential development partners. Using sports to transform the Sebei Community. Gender-based violence, early marriages, teen pregnancies, poverty, high rates of school dropout, female genital mutilation, HIV/AIDS continue to plague the community.

Day 7:  Mosopisiek 2’700m Trail Running or Walking Adventure

After an early morning breakfast, check out of the Home of Friends. Our adventure for today will be the off-the-beaten track Mosopisiek trail, far away from the modern world. Immerse yourself in the indigenous lifestyle of the Mosopisiek in the Kween District. Experience the real Africa! As you get your miles in together with your running guide. Our final destination for the day will be at Coach David’s home. A native and passionate ambassador of the Mosopisiek culture. The Mosopisiek lived as hunter-gatherers in Mount Elgon’s rainforest up to around 1890. Enjoy a wide range of activities along the trail and, after your run, relax with a delicious local meal. You can spend the afternoon walking in this unspoiled and green environment or visit the Mosopisiek women who make handcrafts from the Elgon BambooLater in the evening, enjoy elderly storytelling at the campfire.

Day 8: Mukuuso cave and Mengia Falls Running or walking adventure

Breakfast will be served and you can continue with your adventure on an amazing off-beaten track besides local farms. Continue the adventure in an ancient Mukuuso cave, and its history attached to Mukuuso Water Falls is a wanderlust experience. The Trail Running in Kapchorwa Uganda concludes with the most breathtaking views at Benet Water Falls. Head back home for overnight and dinner.

Day 9: Depart Kapchorwa for Jinja

As your Trail Running adventure ends, it is time to drive back to Jinja where you will spend the night ahead of your safari to Murchison Falls National Park.

Day 10: Hotel Pickup and transfer to Murchison Falls N.P

After breakfast, depart Jinja for Murchison falls arriving Afternoon time. Before check-in in at your lodge, the driver will lead you to the Thunderous Falls as a welcome into Uganda a unique Marvel. The Lodge is within the park boundaries so expect to see some elephants crossing as we arrive at the Lodge, baboons and many bird species. Continue exploring the park and the falls at a panoramic and breathe taking views across the extent of the park all the way to Lake Albert. Head to the thunderous water falls penetrating through a narrow gorge.

Day 11: Murchison Falls National Park

Today is our big day in the wilderness. After an early morning breakfast, your driver/guide will htake you for a 2-3 hours game drive. Numerous giraffes, elephants, buffalo, hyenas, zebras, jackals, and antelopes should be visible. As the drive continues, our ranger guide will lead us to the lion’s den. The game drive to Victoria Nile, which is located in the southern part of Murchison Falls National Park, will take up to three hours at most. Lunch and relaxation at Red chili. After lunch, we will take a two-hour boat trip down the Victoria Nile. More waterside animals, including crocodiles, buffalo, numerous hippos, up-close views of elephants, and an abundance of birds at the base of the falls, can be seen during the boat ride. Following the boat ride, the driver will take you through Budongo Forest and out of the park, arriving in the early evening. In Masindi you may relax or take a walk around town before dinner.

Day 12:  Ziwa Rhino Tracking and Transfer to Entebbe

You will have a  rhino tracking experience after breakfast. After the tracking, you will checkout from the lodge and we will drive back to Kampala or Entebbe (including a lunch stop). We should be arriving early evening in Entebbe to catch your onward flight.
